Best Season to Trek in Nepal

When to Visit Nepal for Trekking

Nepal has four main seasons: Spring, Summer (Monsoon), Autumn, and Winter. The best time to trek depends on the region and your experience level. Choosing the right window can make the difference between a cloudy, difficult trip and a once-in-a-lifetime mountain experience.

Timing your trek correctly ensures better visibility, safer trail conditions, and more comfortable temperatures. While Nepal is a year-round destination, each season offers a completely different landscape and set of challenges.

Autumn (September - November)

This is the peak trekking season. The weather is stable, the skies are crystal clear, and the views of the mountains are at their best. It's the perfect time for high-altitude passes like Thorong La or Cho La.

During these months, the air is clean after the monsoon rains, and the temperature is pleasant at lower altitudes while being manageable at higher elevations. However, this is also the busiest time, so expect crowded tea houses and trails.

Spring (March - May)

The second most popular season. The weather is warmer, and the rhododendrons are in full bloom, coloring the hillsides in shades of red, pink, and white. It's also the best time for mountaineering expeditions.

As the winter snow melts, high-altitude passes become accessible again. The wildlife is more active, and the forest trails are particularly beautiful. The only downside is a slight increase in afternoon haze compared to the autumn months.

Winter (December - February)

Great for lower altitude treks like the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek or the Kathmandu Valley rim. It's very cold at higher altitudes (often below -20C), but the skies are incredibly clear and there are almost no crowds.

If you enjoy solitude and can handle the cold, winter trekking can be very rewarding. However, many high-altitude tea houses close for the season, and deep snow can block major passes.

Summer/Monsoon (June - August)

Generally not recommended for most of Nepal due to heavy rain, leeches, and potential landslides. However, "rain shadow" areas like Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo are perfect for trekking during the monsoon, as they remain dry and accessible while the rest of the country is wet.
